Japanese industrial designer Shinya Yoshida began his career as a car mechanic at Toyota
before transitioning into the world of product and industrial design. Today, he is known for blending engineering precision with artistic craftsmanship.
“It’s hard to explain my transition from auto mechanic to product designer in a single sentence, but my approach to making things hasn’t changed since I was a child.”
For his latest body of work, Yoshida collaborated with skilled Japanese craftspeople to create glass sculptures leveraging techniques that aren‘t typically used in industrial design.
The production takes place at Chiba Optical, a glass manufacturing company located in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The factory is known for producing exceptionally clear optical glass used in highly specialized scientific applications.
Shinya Yoshida reinterprets these industrial materials as luxury sculptural objects, combining technical manufacturing processes with artistic expression.
